A Newcastle man is facing a number of charges after allegedly punching and choking a police officer early this morning.

The male constable and a female senior constable were responding to a domestic violence call in Wallsend when a 24-year-old man at the home became aggressive when they tried to arrest him.Police say the man pushed the constable against a cupboard and punched him in the head, before pinning him to the ground and continuing the assault.He is also accused of scratching the constable's face and trying to choke him.The 24-year-old was eventually tasered and handcuffed after capsicum spray and batons failed to stop the attack.He is facing five charges, including assaulting a police officer.
